EMC, NetApp allege startups stole company secrets

Two of the storage startups with large bankrolls will have to spend a big piece of their cash lawsuits rather than business.

EMC Inc. fired a legal salvo at all-flash startup Pure Storage Inc. and NetApp Inc. has sued hybrid storage vendor Nimble Storage Inc. In both cases, the establish vendors allege that former employees who are now employed by the two startups stole trade secrets, customer lists, and solicited other employees in violation of employment agreements.

EMC and Western Digital make flash software buys

EMC Corp. and Western Digital Corp. strengthened their solid-state storage portfolios this week by acquiring startups with flash software technology to enhance their hardware products.

EMC signed a definitive agreement to acquire storage pooling software provider ScaleIO Inc. following weeks of speculation. The deal is expected to close this month.

Western Digital acquired VeloBit Inc., which sells server-based caching software for block-based primary storage and solid-state drives (SSDs). VeloBit will be integrated into Western Digital's wholly owned subsidiary HGST Inc. (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies), which manufactures SSDs and hard disk drives (HDDs).

Protecting petabytes: Best practices for big data backup

One of the issues created by holding voluminous data sets (also called "big data") in your storage environment is how to protect that data.

Petabyte-size data stores can play havoc with backup windows, and traditional backup is not designed to handle millions of small files. The good news is that not all big data information needs to be backed up in the traditional way.

Nick Kirsch, director of product management for EMC’s Isilon scale-out NAS platform, said it helps to be more intelligent about the data you have when doing big data backups. He advises that, before you consider how to protect your data, you should take a good look at what data needs to be protected. Machine-generated data – report data from a database, for instance – can be reproduced easier than it can be backed up and recovered.

EMC Isilon aims to make Hadoop storage ready for enterprise

EMC Corp. is tackling Hadoop storage by integrating the open source “big data” analytics framework with EMC Isilon scale-out NAS.

Today, EMC said its Isilon OneFS 6.5 operating system natively supports the Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) protocol. The vendor also released EMC Greenplum HD on Isilon. EMC launched Greenplum HD last May, putting Hadoop on its Greenplum data analytics appliance. Now the Greenplum appliance works with Isilon back-end storage.

Tucci at Oracle OpenWorld: Cloud transition will prove disruptive

Private cloud storage, cloud computing and virtualization will be the keys to dealing with the massive data deluge hitting the IT world, EMC Corp. CEO Joseph Tucci said Monday in his Oracle OpenWorld keynote address in San Francisco.

The theme of EMC World 2011 in May was “cloud meets Big Data,” and Tucci and EMC president Pat Gelsinger brought those topics to Oracle customers this week. Tucci and Gelsinger didn’t make any stunning announcements during their keynote presentations, but they did reiterate EMC’s commitment to the cloud, VMware’s virtualization platform and solid-state storage.
